Industrial carcinogens: a need for action.

چکیده
So Oc on Beginning with Percival Pott’s 1775 observation of an excess of scrotal cancer among young chimney sweeps in London, specific agents and processes in the industrial environment are some of the most wellstudied and well-recognized causes of human cancer. Of the 935 agents and exposure circumstances evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), over 400 are now listed as carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic, or possibly carcinogenic[1] and 40% of these are considered industrial/occupational carcinogens.[2]

Immunological studies have shown an increased lymphocyte reactivity in patients with early stage bladder cancer and individuals with pre-stage T1 exposed to bladder carcinogens (2-naphthylamine and industrial 1-naphthylamine containing 4-8% 2-naphthylamine) before 1952-that is, those at high risk of developing bladder cancer. Because of the close chemical similarity of Tobias acid (2-naphthylam...
متن کاملFuture etiologic research in occupational cancer.
Research focused on occupational exposure has been one of the cornerstones of epidemiological research into the etiology of cancer. It is appropriate to critically assess the contribution of this research effort and to assess the potential for making significant progress in the future in unraveling the etiology of cancer by studying the occupational environment. The study of the occupational en...
متن کاملAppropriate models and an understanding of carcinogenic mechanisms--requirements for hazard risk assessment.
Given the immense variety of compounds developed for introduction into the human environment, appropriate carcinogen risk assessment is essential. One of the responsible international bodies recognized as providing a lead in this endeavour is the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), primarily through the Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans. However, serio...
